Here are the resources that I found helpful in improving my ability to speak, write and read mandarin.
Where to start?
First, you would need to learn some basic mandarin language skills.
1. PLECO
This is probably the application I use the most on my phone. Without a doubt, this is my favourite Chinese dictionary. I recommend everyone to just download it and have it on standby. I’m not going to ask you to study a dictionary, but this application is going to be helpful when you have a word that you’re confused with.
2. IMMERSIVE LEARNING
Great tool for all beginners. Its repetitive nature will help you grasp the concepts you need to start learning mandarin.
Afterwards? If you’re still interested in the mandarin
1. DU CHINESE
This application has an abundant amount of short stories which are updated weekly. Its purpose is meant to help you with reading, but it’s helped me with sentence structures, writing, and pronunciation. They offer a free trial, so there’s no reason to not try it!
2. HELLO TALK
Connect with native Mandarin speakers from around the world and become language exchange partners. I would only recommend this application after you have gained some basic Mandarin knowledge. Without a foundation, you may find yourself overwhelmed and lost.
Caution: Not recommended for people 18 years of age and younger. Do be careful with who you talk to. While most people use this application for learning, some people use it for dating. There are creeps everywhere, so protect yourself well.
3. PREPLY/ ITALKI
Get in touch with a language tutor! What I like about these private lessons is that you can 1) control your own schedule 2) be involved in your lesson plans 3) find a teacher who’s suitable for you. These platforms are good for all ages, and it provides a safer space for learning
4. NETFLIX/VIKI
Who said learning had to be boring? To increase my adherence to learning mandarin I’ve picked dramas that I would enjoy, and watch them with pinyin, simplified Chinese, and English subtitles side by side. More with how I do this here.
