Pleco

Making use of Pleco

This is probably one of most frequented apps on my phone. I’ve tried other dictionary applications, but I find Pleco to be user friendly and has most of what I need.

 My favourite features:

1. Dictionary:

In their free dictionary they have a nice collection of words, which is more than enough for my needs. You can expand your Pleco dictionary but purchasing their add-ons.

  1. Audio: Audio for the words are done by a male and female with very clear pronunciation.
  2. Definition, example sentences
  3. Handwriting/ Stroke: There is a “correct way” of writing chinese words, as the strokes have to be drawn in the correct order. This feature demonstrates the stroke order of the word. This is an add-on feature, so if writing chinese is one of your learning goals, I would recommend it.
  4. Measure words: I like how the measure words are mentioned for each noun
  5. History: Allows you to see the previous words you searched for.

2. Screen reader/OCR

OCR stands for optical character recognization. Google translator also does a very good job of this, where you’re able to look up chinese characters by pointing your phone’s camera on them, or by importing images. However!! HOWEVER!! Pleco differs in that they offer a screen reader!

Screen reader is hands down one of my favourite features. As someone who uses their phone a lot, once screen reader is activated, I can easily define words on the page (text or images!) by just clicking on them, and have the word or sentence read to me! All of this is done live, without disrupting the original page I was on. This feature makes me feel like I’m living in the future ~ 哇塞. Add-on feature.
